BOSTON — New research shows children in 4-H programs perform better in science, engineering and technology and are more likely to pursue scientific careers than those who don't take part in 4-H.

That's according to the latest phase of a multiyear study by Tufts University released Wednesday in conjunction with 4-H National Youth Science Day.

The century-old organization has more than 6 million members nationwide.

The report finds that children involved for a longer period got more benefits, and girls benefited more from 4-H than boys. The exact reason was unclear.

The study was commissioned by 4-H and funded by corporations that sponsor the organization. 4-H says an advisory board helps ensure the study is conducted independently.
